Web-based nautical charts automated compilation from open hydrospatial data

Abstract Electronic navigational charts (ENCs) are specialised geospatial datasets, issued by or on the authority of a government hydrographic office, in accordance with International Hydrographic Organisation's (IHO) standards, specifications and symbol sets. The datasets generally comprise encoded information collected from surveys, aimed primarily at safety navigation. Most ENCs not openly available, since encrypted can be acquired through various license schemes via centralised distribution network coordinated two organisations operating behalf coastal states that produce them. This paper describes methodology an integrated system developed National Technical University Athens Cartography Laboratory for generation web-based nautical utilising open data free software. compiles compliant IHO's S-101 latest standard; using hydrospatial retrieved marine spatial infrastructures (MSDI) other qualified volunteered geographic (VGI) sources. Open-source libraries web-map vector technologies used to build components software scripts enable automated compilation. study also discusses how improved further leveraging web services end-to-end process automation satellite-derived bathymetry accurate depiction seabed topography low-depth areas.
